adverse (drug) effect

— A potentially harmful effect resulting from an intervention related to the use of a medicinal product, which constitutes a hazard for an adverse drug reaction and is usually associated with an abnormal laboratory test or clinical investigation.

Adverse effects are increases in undesirable outcomes (e.g more pain or more strokes), or decreases in desirable outcomes (e.g. worse vision or fewer healthy babies), that are attributed to the treatment in a study of treatment effects.
